Additional Spaces & Places: Designing Classrooms for Literacy Information

From Debbie Diller, author of numerous best-selling books and videos on literacy work stations and small group reading instruction, comes another practical resource filled with ideas you can use immediately to better manage your classroom and support student learning and independence.

In Spaces & Places you'll find a wealth of full-color photos from all sorts of classroom spaces in PreK-5th grade, including well-organized areas for whole group and small group reading instruction, classroom libraries, literacy work stations, teacher desks, and storage areas. You'll love the "before and after" pictures and the step-by-step processes outlined for organizing your furniture and cabinets, setting up your room space by space, and using your walls thoughtfully. Debbie has even documented how to pack your room at the end of the year to save time next fall (so you can focus on thinking about instruction) and what to do if you must move all your belongings.

Through pictures and text, this unique visual reference answers tough questions educators ask, such as:What do I really need in my room and what's the best way to set it up?How does my physical classroom impact student learning? How can I find the space I need to teach more effectively? What can I get rid of and how?Where do I put all my stuff?

Charts, reproducible forms, motivating quotes, a list of shopping sources, and reflection questions are included, along with a section outlining ten specific suggestions for on-going staff development. Whether or not you implement literacy work stations in your classroom, Spaces & Places includes everything you need to look deeply at classroom space and how it supports instruction.

What Customers Say About Spaces & Places: Designing Classrooms for Literacy:

Loved it. She uses tons of pictures and has many different options for each and every nook and cranny of your classroom. just loved it. This book is exactly what I was hoping for. It is loaded with great ideas and gives very specific suggestions.

I highly reccomend it. It is chalk full of great ideas for organizing and decorating your classroom in a thoughtful manner and a way to lesson disruptions and increase student attention. I had to move my classroom this year, which forced me to get organized. A friend reccomended this book to me, so I bought it.

Nice color pictures allow you to see actual classrooms and how they have put these ideas into play. Spaces and Places is a wonderful resource for any classroom teacher. It has different sections that refer to setting up your classroom, organizing your classroom, and then packing up your classroom at the end of the year.

More. I think this would make a great staff book club book too. I got rid of extra furniture and the traffic flow is now logical rather than haphazard. More. How many of us see something in another teacher's room and feel like it is ok to copy it. I think this book should be used for pre-service teachers.

I can see how my large group teaching areas are better defined and my small group areas are positioned so that I can still supervise the rest of the room. Hurray for Debbie Diller. I am in my 12th year of teaching and just used this book to redesign my classroom for next fall. The focus here is instructional as well, rather than just asthetic value. More. It got me so excited that I am actually sad that summer is here.

The full color pictures not only help me envision how to organize but have given me instructional ideas as well.

This is a great resource for teachers who are looking for an easy-to- ead guide to organizing.
